Merry-go-round is a social enterprise and registered charity dedicated to helping local families. Our aims are threefold; to save local families money by offering great children’s goods at low prices, to support local families in need with free goods and to provide employment and volunteering opportunities in the local community. We made a nice colourful picture that shows you what we do.
We have a gorgeous shop in the Southside of Glasgow that stocks everything baby at low, low prices. We save families money with fabulous, high quality, pre-loved children’s goods at a fraction of the original price. Find out more about what we stock here. Our friendly staff are always on hand to help you find whatever you need. Be sure to ask them to see other stock options and sizes.
Come find us, we’re open Monday-Saturday, 9.30am-4.30pm.
We host a huge number of events each month – everything from music classes to story time and from breastfeeding support to cloth nappy information. We want to bring you together and meet other people. Our full timetable lets you know what’s on.
Our partnership work
We run a partnership programme working with local agencies to help families in need. We currently have over 100 registered partners including Shelter, Refuweegie and Govanhill Community Development Trust. Our partners access free goods for the women and families that they work with through our online referral system. So far we have given out over 1000 packs to families in need.
Do you work for an agency that works with vulnerable women and families? Please contact us to find out more about registering as a partner to access free goods.
We pride ourselves on being a community hub and somewhere that local families can come to hang out. We’ve got a lovely parenting room for feeding, changing and having a cuppa at any time.
Since we opened in April 2012 over 50 people have come to volunteer with us to gain new skills, meet new people, get work experience or to give back to the community. See the Come join us tab for more information on how to join in the fun.
Rajkiran has been a valued member of our team since we first opened our doors in April 2012. Rajkiran started as a volunteer and is now our full time Retail Manager. Rajkiran has gone from knowing nothing about children’s goods to knowing more about prams, buggies and breastpumps than anyone without children (or with for that matter) should know!
Lynda had been a regular customer at Merry-go-round when she saw we had a position available in the store. She jumped at the chance to join us in August 2013 and since then Lynda has firmly established herself as a stock room and product expert. Lynda knows exactly what we have and where we have it so be sure to test her knowledge next time you’re in.
Nicole started with us through the Community Jobs Scotland scheme for 6 months in October 2014. We’re delighted to have been able to keep Nicole employed initially with the help of the Glasgow Guarantee fund and now fully funded through the shop. She also moonlights at the Hydro and sees more gigs then any of the rest of us combined!
Mark joined us over a year ago through the Community Jobs Scotland scheme, and we liked him so much we kept him on initially with the help of the Glasgow Guarantee fund and now fully funded through the shop. His job as stockroom assistant is to sort, test organise and arrange all the equipment in our stockroom at the shop to Revolve standards. We are lucky to have a dedicated stockroom person to help us get our goodies to you faster.
Events Coordinator & part-time Operations Officer
Debbie has been a familiar face in Merry-go-round since we first opened. She previously hosted the Bumps & Babies group and has now taken on hosting the Nappucino’s and sling workshops too. It seemed sensible that we just go ahead and take her on as our Events co-ordinator! Debbie has many other strings to her bow too including being a birth Doula at Bloom Doula Services. In October last year Debbie also took on the role of Operations officer, with Claire to run our sorting operation at Tollcross making sure we get all those donations ready for the shop floor asap!
Jamie Lee Ward
Funded by the Robertson Trust and the Glasgow Graduate Fund, Jamie Lee coordinates our partnership program liaising with all of our registered agencies to make and distribute baby/ toddler packs for families in need throughout the city. Alongside this she is also responsible for the creation and running of our monthly newsletter and Blog.
Graphic designer and part-time operations officer
Claire first joined us as a retail volunteer but when we realised she was an awesome graphic designer we quickly roped her in to producing all our artwork and posters. She then became our Events coordinator in July 2013 and then our Partnerships coordinator before going on maternity leave and having our very first Merry-go-round baby! Claire now works alongside Debbie as operations officer in Tollcross.
Laura Thom, Samantha Moir, Louise Allan, Lynne Dent, Ross Burns
*New group photo needed!*
Merry-go-round is run by five members of the local community. Samantha Moir founded Merry-go-round after having her son Elliot and realising how much baby stuff was cluttering up the planet. She was determined to ensure at least some of it went to a good home and wanted to encourage other families to buy pre-loved rather than new goods for their little ones. Louise Allan has been involved in Merry-go-round since the beginning and has brought her expertise of running a community theatre company which has proven invaluable! Laura Thom first met Sam at a breastfeeding class when they were both very pregnant and heard Sam talking about her dream of opening Merry-go-round. She was lucky enough to be roped in to get the shop up and running and has now joined the board. Lynne Dent, a local resident and mum works for the BBC and has recently joined us to bring her management expertise. Ross Burns a marketing manager at Zero Waste Scotland has also recently joined us to bring in some marketing support.
If you are interested in joining the board please contact us to find out more.
